It is a waiting game

As I write this blog I receive an email to say that we won’t be going tomorrow.  With the end of Bertha heading our way the weekend is a no go for us.  Because we are doing a two way we need a much longer weather window than those doing a one way crossing so we may still see some swimmers head out tomorrow but we will be sitting tight!

Although the waiting is hard as it is very hard to prepare mentally and physically for I am pretty pleased.  I haven’t had time to pack my bag, eat enough, sleep enough and get my food supplies from the supermarket so there is a bit of relief that I have more time to do this now.

Will keep you all up to date as and when we hear more news.  In the meantime Brian, Parviz and I are going to do a 1.5km swim on Saturday night in the Thames up in Henley to keep our bodies moving.

Meet team COSMIC Rays

As time draws closer to our big swim I thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce you to team COSMIC Rays.

This is my team I will be spending my journey across the channel and back with and hopefully celebrating with on our return to Dover.

Parviz aka Eagle Ray is the reason we are doing this swim. He is the chairman of the charity COSMIC (Children of St Mary’s Intensive Care) and founded the children’s intensive care unit at St Mary’s Hospital (Paddington) 22 years ago.  Since then he has driven the development of the unit to create a 10 bedded unit with state of the art equipment, care and research to help 500 critically ill children every year. He has been on a mission to raise over £50k for COSMIC to be able to fund vital equipment, support for parents, staff training and pioneering research that the NHS is unable to cover.

Paul aka Kiwi Ray (yes you are right there is no such thing as a Kiwi Ray but Paul is a Kiwi) and I swam together last year in our one way six person channel swim and is part of the team this year.  Paul and I have swam together for years now and his humour is always good to have around the boat when things are getting tough.

Hilary aka Tiger Ray, I met Hilary last year whilst training one evening and she is the reason I am swimming this year.  She planted the seed which grew and now is only a week away.  Hilary is a speedy swimmer who loves to laugh so with Paul and Hilary around I am sure there will be plenty of laughter on board – it will be certainly be needed for the long tiring challenge.

Brian aka Shark Ray, Brian like Paul has been a great swim buddy of mine for years.  We have travelled the country to swim in races over the years including River Dart 10km and a 14km swim from Henley to Marlow.  Brian is our reserve swimmer but has been unbelievably committed despite knowing that he might not get to swim.  He has however joined another relay team so his training and dedication won’t go to waste.

Aboard our boat we are also going to be joined by 17-year-old Patrick Kane, who was treated by Parviz and his team at St Mary’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit when he contracted meningococcal disease in 1998. Patrick is going to be our official social media guru and will be sending updates from COSMIC’s twitter and Facebook account throughout the swim.

We also had some great news this week when Richard Branson one of the Trustee’s of the charity offered to pay the cost of the boat which is fantastic news.  The second piece is that the BBC might be joining us on our swim as part of a series they are filming and will be aboard the boat catching our highs and lows on film – I’ll try to not be too grumpy!  We are off to Shepperton on Wednesday for our last training swim and to meet the BBC crew.  Exciting times!

Lastly we made the Daily Mail last week a short read but a little bit of fame for us and some great coverage for COSMIC – Daily Mail Article

As it stands today we will be heading off on Saturday, however, as you may remember from last year this may change closer to the time as the weather becomes more apparent but stand by for the call.  You’ll be able to track us on one of the channel swimming websites when we go and watch us snake our way with the tide to France and back again.  Time is ticking on….

Please don’t forget to donate it is going to be hard work and we do it for a great cause – your donations make us even more determined – Donate to COSMIC

Croatia can do the world of good for ones soul

Having had a rubbish month with shoulder injuries getting me down Tom and I headed off to Croatia to enjoy a week up in Lake Plitvice National Park and in Bol, Brac (one of the Island’s off the coast near Split).

What a wonderful place it was…despite the torrential rain and tremendous thunderstorms we still had a fantastic time.  Lake Plitvice was beautiful with water you just want to dive into but unfortunately swimming isn’t allowed, so we wandered the paths enjoying the amazing scenery whilst getting soaked in the downpours instead.

Next we headed down to Split to get the ferry over to Brac where we would be heading to Bol for 3 days.  Such a beautiful place, I cannot recommend it enough.  Here we were able to spend a few days on the beach enjoying the sun (between downpours) and do a swim along the coast every day.  In this surrounding who wouldn’t love swimming!

With just a week to go till our swim window opens I am feeling much more confident that my shoulder is fit and strong and it was great to be able to spend a few days in the Adriatic Sea testing it out.

Lastly I have to add this photo as Tom is very proud of his photography.  When asked to take a photo of me coming back from my swim to add to this post he delivered me with this wonderful photo – it makes me laugh every time I see it.  A great photo of me swimming you may well agree!

A tough July

It has been a while since I posted on here so with just a week to go till our two way relay I thought I better get on and update you all.  July was a tough month for me as I hardly swam at all due to a shoulder injury which just kept niggling away at me and was making me fall out of love of swimming. Not an ideal time to do this just a month or so out from my swim.
Brownsea Island
I did a beautiful swim last month around Brownsea Island which was about 6.5km but despite the wonderful surroundings my shoulder was giving me grief all the way round so I took about 3 weeks off swimming to rest it and give it a chance to feel fresh again.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel getting back in the water again afterwards but Tom tempted me to do a swim with him just before our holiday to Croatia up in Bedford.  I was entered into the 5km but last minute decided just to do 750m to see how the shoulder felt.  Luckily it felt good and I got a second place spot being pipped to the post by a 15 year old in a wetsuit!  Can’t keep up with the younguns these days. Tom did fantastically and did his longest swim ever – 5km.  He is joining me for a swim in September – swimming the length of Coniston in the Lake District so his training is coming on very well.  My love of swimming is back… just in time 🙂

I’ve only gone and bloomin done it!

Saturday in Dover with Graeme and Vicky

Saturday in Dover with Graeme and Vicky

As seems to be the ‘norm’ these days I headed down to Dover for another weekend of swimming but had decided to stay down this weekend to see if I could get a swim in on Sunday.  I had it in my head that after doing 5 hours last weekend that I should go for the six hour mark and qualify for my solo in 15 months time (the rules state that you can do it up to 30 months beforehand but the water must be under 16 degrees).  As I woke up at 6.30am and drove down to Dover I didn’t feel much like swimming and the weather seemed to mimic my mood with a overcast grey cloud look- where was the sun that was going to make it easier for me!

I met up with the usual crowd as I got down there most of which are doing their solo’s this year and Graeme who is doing a solo across Lake Zurich also came to join in the cold water fun!  My two way relay team were also coming down to do their 2 hour qualifying swim, the relays start their training at 10am so I planned to try and find them in the sea of swimmers from around then so that I had someone to swim with for a couple of hours. I agreed with Freda that I would try for my 6 hours and after the briefing off I went.

The overcast weather was making the water feel colder and I kept hoping the sun would show itself but no chance.  The first two hours went pretty slowly until I managed to find Hilary and Paul just before my first feed – a jelly baby and warm maxi drink.  As they were going for their two hours I headed back out to find them and swam with them for an hour before my next feed, it makes a real difference to be able to swim with someone, even though you aren’t talking it is quite motivating to have someone there – I was also having problems with my goggles for the first time and they were just so fogged up throughout that I couldn’t see anything.  Going in for my feed on the fourth hour was lovely as Hilary, Paul, Brian, G and Andrew were all there cheering me on and offering me encouragement.  It gave me a real boost as the last two hours as I was a little cold (and still wishing the sun would come out) and there were lots of little jellies slipping through my fingers as I swam, I slowly stopped jumping every time I felt one…

Coming in for my feed at 4 hours

Coming in for my feed at 4 hours

As it came up to 6 hours I was still feeling strong, although had had some niggles with my shoulder as it kept pinching (the lovely Kate came me a quick shoulder rub at one point as I was trying to stretch it in the water as I reached one end of the Harbour) I knew I could have carried on which gave me great confidence.  Vicky and all the others that are attempting their channel crossings this year all stayed in for 7 hours and they would be swimming 6 hours on the Sunday – this is where I will need to be next year but for now I was pleased with my 6 and for qualifying to be able to attempt my solo next year.

Me with my certificate to prove my 6 hour swim

Me with my certificate to prove my 6 hour swim

Once Vicky had done her 7 hours the clouds cleared and the sun shone! Typical! We headed off to Folkstone to our hotel.  It was an early night as we were both shattered but we headed to a pub for some hearty grub and a little channel chit chat we headed off to the land of Zzzz’s.  As England were playing that night it was pretty noisy and I didn’t get much sleep so woke up feeling pretty shattered and my back and shoulder were in a bit of pain so I made the decision to only swim for an hour on Sunday.  I sometimes put too much pressure on myself and reminded myself that there is no point in injuring myself for the sake of a few hours of swimming – there is plenty of time for that.  It was much colder than the day before but I stretched the muscles out and did some speed work which was good to do as well as keeping me warmer.

I stayed for the feed at 12 and helped out the team on the beach feeding the swimmers as they come in – it is a bit manic as you are trying to get warm drinks and bananas to them and also take their number and make sure it is recorded so we know we haven’t lost anyone – I have so much admiration for the volunteers such as Freda, Barry and Irene who come down every weekend come rain or shine to help us all try and fulfil our dreams, without them it would be so much harder to organise good training with feed and safety teams.  I am also so thankful to all those that have completed Channel swims of a variety of complexities (solos of one ways, two ways, three way attempts) they offer such great advice and support and help to diminish any fears or questions that are going on in my head about my two way relay and my solo.

It was great to see the other COMIC rays too and it is only now 7.5 weeks until we try to swim to France and back.  It is going to be a long journey and some of you could have been to work twice in the period it will take us to get to France again.  Last year with 6 of us it took us 14 hours just to swim one way!  I am guessing we will have to swim between 6 – 8 one hour stints each and of course will have to swim throughout the night.  This challenge isn’t something that we should underestimate as it is going to be tough both mentally and physically.  Don’t forget to donate a few pennies to COSMIC (A children’s intensive care unit based at St Mary’s Hospital). www.justgiving.com/lisaswims/

So as I left Dover to drive home I realised I was closer to my dream of swimming the channel solo was becoming more of a reality and I am feeling really positive fitness-wise for my two way relay. What a 15 months it is going to be!

Small step for man, giant swim for Lisa

After a 4km swim in Tooting Bec on Friday I took Saturday off to attend my amazing friend Elaine’s memorial service, it was a year ago that we lost her and as many of you know I am dedicating my solo swim next year to her memory.  Having had a sad but nice day catching up with her family and other friends I headed down to Dover on Sunday in the beautiful sunshine with a view of doing a 4 hour swim.

The longest I have swam without a wetsuit was last year and was just under 3 hours (although I have done 3hrs 45 with a wetsuit) so I thought this would be a good stepping stone and having spoke to Freda we agreed I would aim for 4 hours.  Freda originally challenged me to 6 but I negotiated down to 4 as this seemed more where I should be aiming for at this stage.

Dover beach is a great way to meet those that have already swam the channel and those that are currently training to as well as those with other swimming challenges including; Lake Zurich, Swim around Jersey and Loch Lomond.  It is such a great source of information and as I am getting to know more people I am learning a huge amount about both the 2 way relay that I will be attempting with Paul, Parviz and Hilary this year and my solo.

As I would be swimming for more than 2 hours the team at Dover put in place a feeding scheme which meant that after 2 hours we would feed and then every hour after that.  By feed I don’t mean a meal of any sorts! It compromises of a jelly baby (or piece of chocolate if you are lucky) and a maxi solution mixed with warm water and that is it!

Feeding time down in Dover

Feeding time down in Dover

The first two hours I was struggling to keep warm despite the sun on my back and swam on and off with my friend Charlie which although swimming is a pretty unsociable sport (during swimming not after :)) but it is good to have someone there from time to time.  I had also bumped into one of my two way relay team as he had come down for a swim to see how he would get on in the cold water after being in the States for a few weeks.

As it came up to the first feed time I headed in and grabbed my jelly baby and drink and then off I went.  After this each hour went very quickly and as I got to my third hour I started thinking that perhaps I should try for five hours.  My shoulder was aching slightly but nothing too bad and as my fourth hour went really quickly I decided that I was going to go for it whilst I was feeling so good.  I had a quick chat to the team as I came in for my feed and they agreed that I should go for my five hours.  As I swam on I started wondering if I should go for six!  The six hours would mean that I would qualify for my solo swim next year.  As I got to the last 15 minutes my shoulder started twinging and I made the call to call it a day.  This was by far my longest ever swim without a wetsuit and given that my training this year has all been under two hours this was a massive boost for my confidence.

I feel much more confident now about the solo and the two way relay.  I know that I could have done my six hour as I came out feeling really good, which was in my head a huge task and my plan was to get it done by around August so I am well ahead of that…. perhaps this weekend.  However, 6 hours is still a relatively small swim compared to the task in hand which could take anywhere from 14 plus hours depending on weather, tides, currents etc. so I certainly cannot rest on my laurels as I still have a long way to go but it was a big step for me both psychologically and physically.

This weekend I am heading down with my friend Vicky for both Saturday and Sunday (She has her solo attempt in just 3 weeks).  My two way relay team will also be down on Saturday so although they don’t get in the water till 10am I will aim to be around the swimmers beach as they enter so I can swim with them for an hour or two.

Training – It’s been varied and testing

Training has been very varied over the last few weeks but the great thing is I haven’t had to resort to an indoor pool yet.  Work has been busy so I have been trying to fit it in around which has result in me swimming in some new places recently.

Brighton in the sea along the coast towards Hove at 6.30 one morning before a conference an early start but was a great way to start the day and I was lucky enough to be joined by Kate whom I had met in Dover a few weeks before.  Next stop was in Manchester, I had swam in the Commonweath games pool a few times previously when I have been up there but did a bit of research this time before and found an outdoor swimming venue in Salford Quays so managed a good 4.5km – it was much chillier than the lakes near London so was great training for me.

My usual training venues in London have been Brockwell Park Lido although now Tooting Bec has opened I have moved there as it is colder (strange to want to find colder water I know!) and on Monday & Wednesday nights over to Shepperton Lake where I am usually joined by Vicky who has her solo channel attempt in 4 weeks and Graeme who is currently training for Zurich and has previously done the channel – great people to be surrounded by.

I had planned a trip down to Dover last Sunday but when I woke up at 6 my body just said ‘NO’.  I had been suffering from a stomach bug since the Wednesday, I couldn’t work out if it was from swallowing some water from the Quay or something I ate but either way it was taking it all out of me.  Tom and I had done a short swim at Tooting Bec Lido on Saturday and I kept suffering from stomach pains and was worried that I might get them in the middle of Dover harbour which would be as you can imagine far from ideal, so I took the day off and slept and watched the tennis.  I think I would make a great couch potato 🙂

On Monday evening I decided to head to Shepperton to see how I got on and after the first lap (750m) I was sick but thought it was something I am likely to have to deal with in the channel especially in my solo so just to get on with it – which I did.  Tom was swimming too and wasn’t enjoying it that much so after 2 laps I swam with him to check he was okay.  All in all swam a slow but good 4.5km.  When I got home I realised I had been bitten all over my body which hasn’t been fun and not something I have experienced before – I am pretending they are jellyfish stings and dealing with it as it is again something I am likely to have to deal with both this year in the relay and the solo.  So currently training with bites and a stomach bug is testing me!

The plan is to head down to Dover on Sunday and hopefully get a 4 hour swim in as I build up my hours this year.  I still really want to get my solo qualifier done this year which is a 6 hours swim in under 16 degree water (a year in advance) as I think psychologically it will be a great stepping stone for me.

Ah Dover my old friend

This weekend saw me start my cold water training/acclimatisation training.  Having grown up in the UAE the thought of cold water always fills me with dread and as I drove down to Dover on Saturday for the start of the Dover channel training season there was no exception!

The Dover beach training sessions are run by Freda who every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday is down there without fail with a small crew who come down voluntarily and help Channel swimmers (both relay and solo) to try to fulfil their dreams/ambitions.  As some of you know not only am I training for the 2 way relay this year but also a solo swim across the English Channel in 2015 so I made the decision this year to train with the solo swimmers (aka red caps) instead of the relay swimmers (yellow caps) although I will train with my 2 way relay team whenever they are down in Dover.

The rules to channel training in Dover

Solo training starts at 9 am every weekend and you are never quite sure what Freda is going to make you do – all part of the training surprise.  On Saturday we had the task of a 45 minute swim with an hour break followed by a 50 minute which in normal temperature water isn’t a huge task… in 11.4 degrees not so much fun!  As I walked into the water I could already feel my skin burning from the cold (remember no wetsuits are allowed for official channel crossings), as I started swimming and put my head in the water I just kept getting the worst ice-cream headache so I chose to swim breaststroke for a minute or two and then off I went.  The first 5-10 minutes was tough going but as I got into my stride then it was fine.

ImageImage

Once we got out of the water and warmed up with lots of warm layers (big winter parka jacket did the job) a quick visit to Starbucks (unlike me to drink a hot drink but much needed) and then off we were back in the water.  Luckily second time round the ice cream headache took a little less time hanging around and I got into my frontcrawl a lot quicker.

I did a 50 minute swim in Brockwell Park Lido on Monday afternoon where the water was a balmy 15.6 degrees, the Channel rarely gets warmer than 16 so a good training temperature so a few more trips there planned whilst I wait for Tooting Bec Lido to open to the public.

Although I wasn’t looking forward to it, it was certainly a good step psychologically to start the season so early on in the cold water – it only gets warmer from here!

To France & back again!

So it seems that swimming to France with 5 pals last year just wasn’t enough for me and somehow I find myself in a situation that will see me (during the week of 9th – 16th August 2014) swim with 3 pals to France and then turning around and swimming straight back – yes I seem a glutton for punishment!

So we are 2 swimmers less and doubling the distance – meaning being more tired as it will take us about 30 hours to complete, having to swim through a night (not looking forward to this) and seeing more jellyfish! … as well as all the other challenges of swimming across the English Channel – remember we can only wear a swimming costume (no wetsuits allowed), a swim hat and a pair of goggles and the temperature in the sea doesn’t get warmer than 16 degrees.

I am saying goodbye to my Flamingo pals (although it seems Paul is as crazy as me and is coming along too) and say hello to my new team – COSMIC Rays.

Training has started and Paul, Hilary and I were over in Lanzarote last month for a week and managed around 50km of swimming each (that’s 2000 lengths of a pool), next step (on top of the usual indoor pool swimming) are the trips down to Dover and swimming up and down the harbour in the cold water over the weekends but I’ll update you on that once we start.

COSMIC Rays are going to be undertaking this massive challenge to raise money for an children’s intensive care unit based at St Mary’s Hospital.  It’s a really tough challenge but I do believe that the children that are admitted to this unit have to fight bigger challenges day in day out at such a young age that it is a small challenge for us adults to take on to help them lead better and more comfortable lives.

If you have a few pennies to spare and want to help us help them then you can do so here or click on the donate button above.
